Job Summary

The American Red Cross is seeking a compassionate, dedicated, and organized individual to join our Disaster Cycle Services team as a Caseworker, Disaster Services. This critical field support role provides immediate and ongoing recovery support to individuals and families affected by natural or man-made disasters. As a Caseworker, you will offer client-centered services including needs assessment, planning, resource referrals, and financial assistance, helping survivors return to stability and resilience. This position may require deployment to disaster-affected areas on short notice.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide direct casework services to individuals and families affected by disasters, following Red Cross standards and procedures.

  • Conduct comprehensive needs assessments and develop recovery plans tailored to the clients circumstances.

  • Coordinate with local, state, and federal resources to ensure clients receive necessary support.

  • Maintain accurate and confidential client records in Red Cross systems.

  • Serve as a liaison between disaster clients and partner organizations, ensuring continuity of care and effective resource referrals.

  • Collaborate with internal disaster teams to support sheltering, feeding, and health service operations as needed.

  • Participate in team briefings, training, and debriefings during deployment and after action reviews.

  • Provide culturally competent, trauma-informed, and equitable service delivery.

  • Travel and deploy to disaster sites for extended periods as required (up to 2 weeks at a time, occasionally on short notice).


Required Skills and Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in social work, human services, psychology, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trust quickly in crisis situations.

  • Knowledge of case management best practices and experience in client support roles.

  • High level of emotional intelligence, empathy, and cultural sensitivity.

  • Proficiency in using digital case management systems and Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse, multidisciplinary team.

  • Valid drivers license and willingness to travel for deployments.


Experience

  • Minimum of 1–3 years of experience in human services, case management, disaster recovery, or a related field.

  • Experience working with vulnerable populations, crisis intervention, or trauma-informed care is highly desirable.

  • Previous volunteer or professional experience with emergency response agencies or nonprofits is a plus.


Working Hours

  • Full-time position with a flexible schedule.

  • Must be available to work irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays during active disaster operations.

  • On-call rotation and deployment availability required (typically 10–14 days per deployment cycle).


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Deep understanding of the disaster cycle and recovery process.

  • Working knowledge of community-based services and government relief programs (e.g., FEMA, HUD).

  • Ability to assess and prioritize complex needs in a fast-paced environment.

  • Strong documentation and organizational skills.

  • Bilingual or multilingual abilities are highly preferred (especially Spanish, Vietnamese, or Arabic).
