Job Summary
The City of Austin is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Library Assistant to support the daily operations of its public library system. This role involves engaging with the community, assisting patrons with various services, and ensuring the library remains a welcoming and resourceful environment. Key Responsibilities
- Assist patrons with locating books, digital resources, and other library materials.
- Support library programs and events, such as book clubs, workshops, and childrens activities.
- Perform check-in and check-out services, manage overdue notices, and process new materials.
- Provide guidance on the use of computers, printers, and digital library services.
- Organize and shelve returned materials accurately and efficiently.
- Maintain a clean and orderly library environment.
- Collaborate with library staff to ensure smooth daily operations.
- Address patron inquiries and resolve issues in a friendly, professional manner.
- Support library outreach initiatives to engage the local community.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent (Associates or Bachelors degree preferred).
- Strong customer service and communication skills.
- Proficiency in using computers and common software applications (e.g., Microsoft Office, library management systems).
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Attention to detail and excellent organizational skills.
- Enthusiasm for promoting literacy and lifelong learning.
- Physical ability to lift and move books or materials as needed.
Experience
- Previous experience in a library, educational, or customer service setting is preferred but not required.
- Familiarity with library cataloging and classification systems is a plus.
Working Hours
