Job Summary:
The City of Austin is seeking a dedicated and highly organized individual for the position of Public Works Specialist. This role is essential in supporting and managing public works programs and projects that contribute to the improvement and maintenance of Austins infrastructure. The ideal candidate will bring their expertise in public service, be ready to engage in hands-on tasks, and help ensure the delivery of quality services to the community.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan, coordinate, and oversee public works projects including construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, and related infrastructure.
- Ensure compliance with city policies, codes, and regulations related to public works operations.
- Provide technical assistance and guidance to teams performing construction or maintenance tasks.
- Monitor project progress, resolve problems, and ensure adherence to timelines and budgets.
- Respond to inquiries from the public regarding public works activities, providing information and addressing concerns.
- Perform routine inspections of public infrastructure to ensure compliance with safety standards and operational effectiveness.
- Prepare reports on project status, work schedules, and other performance metrics.
- Collaborate with other city departments, contractors, and vendors to support public works initiatives.
- Assist in emergency response operations during weather-related events, natural disasters, or other public safety incidents.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent; a degree in civil engineering, construction management, or a related field is preferred.
- Proven experience in public works or a related field, including familiarity with municipal infrastructure.
- Strong knowledge of public works policies, regulations, and best practices.
- Proficiency in using relevant software, including project management and GIS tools.
- Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Knowledge of safety protocols and environmental regulations.
- Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
- Valid drivers license with a clean driving record.
Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in public works, construction, or a related field.
- Experience in project management, budget management, and staff supervision is a plus.
- Previous experience working within a municipal or governmental organization is highly desirable.
Working Hours:
- Full-time position.
- Standard working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
- Occasional evenings, weekends, or emergency response work may be required based on the needs of the city.

- Knowledge: In-depth understanding of public works systems, municipal codes, and construction management.
- Skills: Project management, technical reporting, budgeting, and supervisory skills.
- Abilities: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, effectively resolve conflicts, and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders.
